This course teaches the principles of transfer medicine to facilitate the safe transfer of critically unwell patients.
Based on national guidance, WMCCTC teaches the underlying principles of transfer and how to use a structured approach, to ensure that patients are transferred safely and by appropriately trained clinicians.
The learning objectives for the course include:
Why do we transfer patients
How do we prepare for the transfer
How do we manage the patient during the transferÂ
These principles are taught throughout the course and apply to all transfers, whether intra-hospital or inter-hospital.
The interactive and fundamental initial lectures of the transfer course introduce participants to the critical aspects of patient transfer, setting the scene for the entire program. These sessions cover essential topics, including regional transfer services and their delivery, a general introduction to transfers, and crucial initial considerations for transferring patients who are sick or injured.
The workshops, led by experienced clinicians, are conducted in small groups, allowing participants to delve deeply into core topics for transfer in a focused setting. These sessions build upon the foundational lectures, providing hands-on learning and in-depth exploration of key concepts.
The simulation sessions provide a dynamic and immersive environment for participants to apply and refine their transfer skills in realistic scenarios. These practical sessions enable hands-on experience with high-fidelity manikins and equipment, fostering critical thinking and team communication in a safe learning space.
